My paintings in the 2024 SCA Derby art exhibition is an exploration of emotions and healing through my series titled “Internal Dialogue.” Inspired by Ray Gumbley’s evocative “Blue Seas” photography, my journey began in a moment of personal loss, seeking solace and tranquility amidst internal turmoil. My initial quest to recreate that serenity in an artwork akin to “Blue Seas” expanded into a broader exploration of time’s passage, represented through diverse colour palettes echoing different moments within a 24 hour day in June.
The series evolution from seeking calmness to embracing the boldness of line and colour mirrors the transformation of internal dialogue at these times. Initially silenced by loss, it gradually intensifies into a vibrant expression, symbolising the healing process. I wanted to capture the essence of emotional progression, showcasing the interplay between personal experience, visual inspiration, and the healing power of time.
Looking back at this series, painted over the last year, I love how it expresses resilience of spirit, illustrating how creativity can be a channel for personal introspection and eventual renewal. It not only pays homage to Ray’s influence but also encapsulates my journey of emotional rejuvenation through art. And for me, that is what art can do for the human soul.
